The cornerstone for gene function annotation is intimately related to the knowledge of which specific cell types express any given gene. Independently of the scientific strategy that led to the identification of a novel gene and its suspected function, it remains essential to confirm the initial hypothesis by providing direct evidence that the gene is indeed expressed in the right effector cells and/or that it is co-expressed with other markers in the same pathway.

Furthermore, Cytochem’s holistic approach can uncover additional unsuspected functions by revealing expressing in different tissues. Cytochem completed several projects where the whole-body strategy made a major contribution to assigning function to orphan genes.
